Jonathan Black is a school improvement leader specialising in behaviour, attendance, and inclusive culture. With experience as an Executive Headteacher and senior leader across multiple settings, he has led significant, sustained improvements in behaviour systems, attendance strategy, and post‑16 outcomes. His work is rooted in a belief that strong relationships, high expectations, and intelligent systems design are the foundations of a thriving school.
Jonathan has a particular track record in transforming attendance — diagnosing persistent absence through deep data analysis, reshaping pastoral and SEND structures, and building approaches that reconnect the most vulnerable learners. His leadership blends strategic clarity with a strong moral purpose: ensuring every child is known, supported, and able to succeed.
He was asked to present this work at the DfE’s RISE conference on attendance and has facilitated the NPQLBC for SWIFT. Jonathan now works with schools and trusts to diagnose complex behaviour and attendance challenges and design practical, sustainable solutions tailored to their communities.
